Itinerary:

DAY 1: KAVALA – RHODOPE - LEIVADITIS
Arrival in Kavala airport. Meet and assistance. Start our cultural tour with a four-hour drive to the mountains of Western Rhodope, covered by one of the most unspoiled forests of Europe. We will visit the unique fortress of Kalyva which used to control the passage into the valley of Nestos. Although it is now little more than a ruin, it still retains all of it charms as it stands lost in the thickness of the forest. The journey continues through the thick forests to the kingdom of the great brown bear. In the afternoon we will visit the unique natural monument with the gigantic oaks that reach incredible heights and remind us of the sequoias of North America. Overnight stay in the forest huts of Leivaditis.
DAY 2: LEIVADITIS –NESTOS RIVER–KOMNINA–AVDIRA-XANTHI
Early in the morning we will hike to the waterfall of Leivaditis which is the highest in the Balkans. We then continue until we reach Stavroupoli, a couple hours’ drive away. The town is built in the heart of the green valley of Nestos. Continue to the Macedonian burial of Komnina as well as a visit to the excavations of ancient Avdira by the Aegean, which has one of the most interesting regional museums in the country. We will end the day in Xanthi which has preserved its charming unchanged historical centre. Overnight in 4* hotel in Xanthi.
DAY 3: XANTHI – POMAK VILLAGES – PERITHEORIO – KOMOTINI
Morning visit to the Pomak villages around Xanthi. Here we will discover a rock-carving of the Persian god Mithras. We continue through Christian and Muslim villages, to visit Peritheorio, emerging from the thickness of its jungle-like environment. Then we will go to the valley of the Kompsatos river to see the large bowed structure of the bridge, one of the most beautiful in Greece, and then we will visit the archeological museum of Komotini. Overnight in 4* hotel in Komotini.
DAY 4: KOMOTINI – MARONEIA–MESIMVRIA – FERRES–DADIA N.P.
We will learn more about the history of the region through the Roman and Byzantine ruins which are which are spread around the olivegroves of Maroneia. We will head to ancient Mesimvria where the ruins are gently soaked by the waves of the sea. Continue to Fwerres, to visit one of the best examples of Byzantine architecture, the church of Mary the Savior. We will also see the Delta of River Evros with its rare birds. We will also experience a piece of pre-historic life by scrutinizing the finds of the fossilized forest of Fylakto. We will end our day in the National Park of Dadia. Overnight stay in the forest lodges.
DAY 5: DADIA – SOUFLI – PYTHIO – DIDYMOTEICHO - ORESTIAS
Today we will have the chance to discover a magical place that is unique in Europe. After a drive through the pine forest we will observe the morning feeding of the rare vultures. We will then visit the well-known silk-producing village of Soufli that has retained its traditional architecture. We will also see Pythio with its double tower which stands above the river of Evros and we will discover Didymoteicho with its rich history and Byzantine ruins. Overnight in Orestias in 3* hotel.
DAY 6: ORESTIAS–DOXIPARA–AISYMI–AVAS-ALAEXANDROUPOLIS
Morning visit to the archeological excavations of Doxipara. The findings can be compared to those of the royal Thracian burials in neighboring Bulgaria. We will then take the inside road of Oriental Rhodope to discover the isolated Pomak villages of Evros. Our aim is to see the megalithic dolmens and the rock carvings which are scattered in the woods. We will continue our drive through the majestic landscapes and huge Aeolian parks; we will cross the narrow valley of Aisymi and the towers of Avas before we arrive at Alexandroupoli where we will spend the night. Overnight in 5* hotel.
DAY 7: DEPARTURE
Transfer to the airport for our flight to Athens, or other destinations.
