Prefecture of Kavala and town of Kavala ... More

Kavala is a prefecture in Eastern Macedonia-Thrace with the Nestos Delta and associated lagoons in the south and to the north, the Rhodope mountains. The city is built by the sea, on the slopes of Mount Symvolo. The existence of a small settlement dating to Neolithic times (6500-3200 BC.) has been identified. At the eastern end of the city one can see where the first signs of habitation began in the area. With its harbour and trade in tobacco, Kavala along with Xanthi, were the principal nodes for the tobacco trade in former times.
