Rhodope is one of the most culturally diverse prefectures in Greece. Side by side live Turks, Greeks, Pomaks and Roma, Muslims and Shites. Komotini is the capital of the Prefecture of Rhodope, the administrative headquarters of the region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace and home of the Democritus University of Thrace. Prominent is the Archaeological Museum, the Byzantine church of the Virgin [Panagia], the "Yeni Mosque" and the Clock Tower, a monument which is considered a sample of Ottoman modernization of 1884, and a tribute of Sultan Abdul Hamid, to the city of Komotini.
