33rd part of Drama cultural routes - THE BOYS HIGH SCHOOL (GYMNASION ARRENON)

THE BOYS HIGH SCHOOL (GYMNASION ARRENON), an imposing two-storey building and one of the most beautiful school buildings in the country, was built at the Northeast edge of the town of Drama, at the end of Mitropolitis Chrysostomos Street. Its construction followed the tradition initiated in Drama by bishop Chrysostomos Kalafatis, who wanted grand and impressive schools to be built in order to rival with the wealthy Turkish schools. It also resulted from a claim of the community of Drama, which demanded of the authorities the construction of a respectable school building. Its construction began around 1927-28 and, although it was ready in 1932, the school started functioning only at the beginning of 1935. The building is made of stone, whereas its columns, beams and arches are made of concrete.
