19th part of Drama cultural routes - THE ECCLESIASTICAL MUSEUM

THE ECCLESIASTICAL MUSEUM is housed in a five-storey building, a wing of the Episcopal Edifice of Drama (at the end of Venizelos Street). It was founded during the primateship of Metropolitan Dionysius (1965-2005). Most of the ecclesiastic treasures exhibited in the spacious halls of this small, yet impressive museum, come from the heirlooms brought along by refugees from Asia Minor and from the Pontοs in 1922-24. These exhibits are of inestimable artistic and historical value. A special reference ought to be made to the icons of the “Virgin Odegetria” and the “Lord Blessing”, which are the oldest of the exhibited. Among the exhibits are also many holy objects that belonged to bishop Chrysostomos (liturgical implements, archbishop’s vestments, altar cloths, etc.).
