24th part of Drama cultural routes – Church of HAGIA VARVARA

CHURCH OF HAGIA VARVARA NEXT TO THE LAKE there is a small church dedicated to patron Saint of Drama, Hagia Varvara, celebrated on 4th December. On the day before the Saint’s name day, after the mass held in this small picturesque church, residents go around their neighborhood to distribute a traditional dessert basically made of wheat and called «varvara». In the evening, children leave small boats decorated with candles lit in honor of the Saint on the surface of the main pond. This is also where the whole town gathers to watch the immersion of the Cross on the day of the Epiphany. In the past, after the Cross was thrown into the middle of the lake, men on horseback would begin a procession from inside the lake and continue through the streets of the town of Drama.
