28th part of Drama cultural routes – VISITOR INFORMATION CENTER (former building of the Hellenic Railways Company)

VISITOR INFORMATION CENTER (former building of the Hellenic Railways Company)

THE VISITOR INFORMATION CENTER is located in the heart of the Hagia Varvara Springs area in a building formerly belonging to the Hellenic Railways Company. Here information leaflets, guides and maps of Drama and its region are available to the public. Various documents, photographs, publications, literature and a scale model of the Springs area can be seen on the first floor. The chronological record of Drama from the Neolithic Period to the present days, as well as a presentation of the local historical buildings, mansions and tobacco warehouses are on display on the ground floor.
The natural history section displays the wildlife and flora, local products and natural stones of the region.
“Doxa Dramas”, the legendary football team of Drama, also has its place at the Visitor Information Center. There is a variety of archival material (printed documents, medals, photographs, etc.) to remind us of the achievements of this team, which distinguished itself on a national level in the past and which continues to be loved by the people of Drama.
The books published by the “Municipal Enterprise for Social, Cultural and Tourist Development” (DEKPOTA) are also on display at the Visitor Information Center for visitors to consult.
The old building of the Hellenic Railways Company was constructed in 1895, at the same time as the Railway Station, and for a century was used as a pumping station providing the Hellenic Railways Company with the large quantities of water used by steam engines. There were two steam-powered pumps, which pumped lake water and distributed it to the water tower and the Hellenic Railways Company facilities through a network of pipes.
