29th part of Drama cultural routes - HERMAN SPIERER TOBACCO WAREHOUSE

THE HERMAN SPIERER tobacco warehouse on the North side of the lake was built in 1925. Its construction by Konrad Von Vilas caused great controversy due to its considerable height. It is a five-storey construction of great length, width and height. The choice of its location was determined by the fact that the humidity of the Hagia Varvara area was necessary for the storage and preservation of the tobacco leaves.

The oldest of the tobacco warehouses, built as early as 1874, is the one near the so-called “Bulgarian” pond of Hagia Varvara, one side of which is tangent to the Anastasiadis’ mansion (also called the “marble house”) at 5 Hagia Varvara Street. This remarkable mansion, built to serve as residence for tobacco trader Anastasiadis, has a rectangular ground plan. It is a massive and dominating, yet unique building wholly constructed of local white marble.
