2500 YEARS OF HISTORY IN ONE HOUR – HAGIOS NIKOLAOS CHURCH

THIS BUILDING IS LOCATED in the center of the town, on the Southwest corner of the “Eleftheria” Square. During the Turkish occupation it was called “Eski cami” (ancient mosque) or “Çarşı   cami” (market-place mosque). The original building was built by Sultan Bayesid II (1481-1512). Its roof is of great interest. The dome, the nine semicircular vaults and the semi cylindrical arcades are covered in lead sheets. After 1922 and the Population Exchange, the Muslim mosque was transformed into a Christian church dedicated to Saint Nicholas.
