31st part of Drama cultural routes - THE CHILD PROTECTION CENTER OF DRAMA

THE CHILD PROTECTION CENTER OF DRAMA (ORPHANAGE) is located in what used to be the Turkish secondary level school (Rüşdiye). It was built according to the blueprints of architect Konrad Von Vilas before 1910, on today’s Hippokrates Street. The building has three levels: a semi-basement, a first floor and a garret. It reflects the public building norms of the time: a rectangular ground plan with a threefold segmented façade, and a projection of the central and of the two far-end sections. Here again, Konrad Von Vilas mixed classical features with elements from other periods and currents. The most characteristic features of this building are its row of laced eaves under the roof and its two curved flights of stairs at the main entrance.
