WATERMILLS
THE LARGE NUMBER of watermills in Drama is due to the abundance of water sources, especially in the area of Hagia Varvara. At the beginning of the 20th century, it is estimated that there were fifteen of them. During the Ottoman Period, they were the exclusive ownership of Ottomans. The industrial company “Antonios Ziogas & Co.”
imported the first water turbine to exploit the area’s hydraulic power and, thus, the flour industry experienced a significant expansion. Nowadays there are three watermills left on the South side of the springs (the Zonke, Pandoulis and Dimiropoulos watermills). They had a space for the grinding, and another for the storage, and their main characteristic feature is their arched stone foundation. The Zonke watermill has kept its mechanical equipment, the water wheel of the driving mechanism beneath its arches and above that, the grinding area with its grinding stones.
The Dimiropoulos watermill has been saved virtually intact behind the “Melina Hall”. The Pandoulis watermill has been partially saved but has been turned into an entertaintent center.
