Evros Delta Natural Park
This internationally important wetland comprises, on its Greek side of the border, an area of 188km2. On the Turkish side of the border, the delta is also a conservation area and natural park and is equally fascinating. Evros Delta is formed by the Evros, the largest river in Balkans. It is classified as a “Ramsar” wetland and protected by EU and national legislation. In the Evros Delta one can see all kinds of natural formations typical of a Mediterranean Delta: riparian forests, flooded meadows, freshwater canals, lakes, lagoons, salt marshes and sandy islets. The Delta’s wildlife value is extraordinary. Over 320 bird species have been observed. Large populations of waterfowl, shorebirds and raptors winter here. Tens of thousands of ducks white-fronted geese, red geese, great spotted eagle , imperial eagle, flamingoes, herons , pelicans , and others. The Evros Delta is also an important migratory stop for large populations of shorebirds, raptors, water fowl and other birds.
Evros Delta is particularly worth visiting for bird watchers in the winter, as it is during this time that many birds choose to settle and see out the stormy weather.
At the same time, 40 species of mammals, 28 species of reptiles and amphibians, 46 species of fish live in the wetland further enhancing its value. Finally, dozens of residents of the surrounding areas: farmers, ranchers and fishermen have for decade used the Delta as a source of income. The mixture of sea water with fresh river water attracts fish and the Delta is an important spawning ground.
Also if interest is some interesting archaeological remains. Along the fringes of the Delta, the old but famous Roman road, the Via Egnatia passed through, and one can still visit and see remains in the Delta of this ancient highway. Hugging the borders of the Delta one can also find and visit spas, which have been used since ancient times.
