Jews of Evros Prefecture

Jews of Evros, includes towns of Didymoteicho, Orestiada and Alexandroupolis

In Didymoteichio had a population of about 740 Jews you can see. Only 33 [4%] survived the war. The town to honour the memory of the Jews has named a street after them: “Evreon Martyron” [Jewish Martyrs Street]. One can also visit the Jewish Cemetery. Most interesting is the mosaic floor of the old synagogue which the town has preserved where the town has also installed a memorial.

The town of Orestiada had a c Jewish population of 197 of whom 98% lost their lives in the catastrophe of World War II. The town of Soufli had a population of 32 Jews before the war. All were killed by the Nazis.

Alexandroupolis had a population of about 150 Jews before the Second World War. 97% were killed by the Nazis. Only 4 Jews survived. Today there is no trace left of this community.
