Makri
Situated just twelve miles [17 kilometres] along the coast and west of the town of Alexandroupolis is the settlement of Makri with its picturesque harbour of Platanos. Above the beach is a natural rocky relief topped by a mound which is in fact an ancient tumulus. Inside the rocky mound is a cave, known locally as the Cave of the Cyclops. The cave shows traces of use from prehistoric times to the Byzantine period. Its walls have been carved with various constructions and additions such as niches and steps. The archaeological excavation, which was carried out in recent years, brought to light an important Neolithic settlement (4500-3000 BC). Indeed, this Neolithic site is considered to be one of the most important sites in the Balkans.
