National Park of the Rhodopi Mountain Range

Situated in the regions of Drama and Xanthi, the park occupies an area of 173,115 hectares. It was designated a National Park by the Joint Ministerial Decision: 40379/01-10-2009 (GG445D/02-10-2009).

In the Park one can find all the vegetation zones of Europe. It is the most extensive and productive forest which, uniquely for Greece, include ecological habitats which are found in northern Europe .

The area is composed mainly of tall mountains with high relief. The complex network of streams and rivers is dominated by the River Nestos and two artificial lakes. This makes the presence of water crucial to the formation of the park’s local character.

The Rhodope Mountains is a precious mosaic of ecosystems in the Balkans making it one of the most interesting ecological regions of Europe, thanks in part to its geographical position, geology and geomorphology and the fact that it was not covered by glaciers in the last ice age. As a result, many species of fauna and flora from central and northern Europe found refuge in the Rhodope, making these mountains their southern-most refuge. For these reasons the Park provides shelter to a large number of protected animals such as brown bears, wild goats , wild cou-cou bird, hazel-grouse and others.
